6 days ago · Built in the early 15th century during the Ming Dynasty, the Forbidden City served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors over nearly 500 years. The name “Forbidden” refers to the fact that ordinary citizens were not allowed to enter.

The Qing emperors occupied two major palace locations: the official “Forbidden City” in Beijing, which they inherited from the Ming emperors, and the “Yuanmingyuan,” or Old Summer Palace, on the outskirts of Beijing, begun by the Kangxi Emperor that was in fact their primary residence.

The Forbidden City is a very large complex of pavilions, palaces, gardens and courtyards located in the center of Beijing, the Chinese capital. It is the ancient palace of the emperors of China and as such it was the most sacred place of the country since its construction, in 1420.

Forbidden City is the top attraction in Beijing and China plus the world’s most visited site. Imperial City was the domain of 24 Ming and Qing dynasty emperors before becoming the Palace Museum in 1925.
