The Trevi Fountain in Rome will undergo a much-needed cleaning, while allowing visitors an intimate glimpse of the restoration process.

A glass and steel walkway is to be built across Rome’s Trevi Fountain, restricting access to visitors as the water is emptied ahead of a thorough scrubbing. Only a few people will be allowed on the walkway at once in what the city authorities say will be a likely precursor to charging an entrance fee to the baroque monument.

In the coming months, visitors will only be able to approach the city's best-loved fountain using a walkway built while restoration work is under way.

ROME - Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain is to undergo a two-month clean-up when some visitors will get a rare, close-up view of the Baroque masterpiece from a suspended walkway, authorities said on Oct 7. Construction of the walkway began on Oct 7 “to allow for a major extraordinary maintenance intervention” on the fountain, Rome city council said.

The city’s top tourism official, Roberto Onorato, says the goal is to make the experience more enjoyable for tourists and the area less aggravating for residents.

Access to the Trevi Fountain will be limited during the Roman Catholic Jubilee Holy Year of 2025 in a pilot scheme that may lead to the introduction of a fee to see the iconic Roman landmark, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said Monday.
