Salaam played for Gang Green for eight seasons beginning in 1976. The quartet earned their nickname in 1981 shortly after they rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange. It was that season where they made a name for themselves on the field as they led the NFL with 66 sacks. The Jets finished with a solid 10-5-1 record that year.
